The Symbolism of Hexagram 34

Hexagram 大壯 (Dà Zhuàng) describes the emergence of strong force within a system. Power is present and active, but not yet fully integrated with conditions.

Thunder above heaven indicates activation over strength—movement driven by energy that can exceed structural limits. The central issue is not having power, but applying it without creating instability.

Hexagram 34 Judgment

The Judgment reads:
Original Chinese:
大壯,利貞。
(Dà zhuàng, lì zhēn.)
English Translation:
"Great force. It is favorable to remain steady."

Power is present, but must be regulated. Stability determines whether force produces progress or disruption.

Remaining aligned prevents excess. Without control, force leads to collision with limits.

Hexagram 34 Image

The Image reads:
Original Chinese:
雷在天上,大壯。君子以非禮勿履。
(Léi zài tiān shàng, dà zhuàng. Jūn zǐ yǐ fēi lǐ wù lǚ.)
English Translation:
"Thunder above heaven: great force. One does not step beyond proper bounds."

Thunder moves across the sky with intensity, but remains within its domain. This reflects force operating within constraints.

Exceeding limits creates instability. Proper boundaries allow force to function without damage.

Line 4 Changing

This line reads:
Original Chinese:
貞吉,悔亡。藩決不羸,壯于大輿之輹。
(Zhēn jí, huǐ wáng. Fān jué bù léi, zhuàng yú dà yú zhī fù.)
English Translation:
"Steadiness brings favorable outcome. Constraint is released without depletion. Strength is carried through the structure."

The system overcomes obstruction without loss of integrity. Force is no longer blocked or wasted.

Power is now integrated into the system’s framework, allowing effective transmission rather than collision.

Line 6 Changing

This line reads:
Original Chinese:
羝羊觸藩,不能退,不能遂,无攸利,艱則吉。
(Dī yáng chù fān, bù néng tuì, bù néng suì, wú yōu lì, jiān zé jí.)
English Translation:
"Force strikes a barrier and becomes stuck. It cannot advance or withdraw. No direction is beneficial. Through difficulty, resolution comes."

Force is misapplied and becomes locked between opposing constraints. The system is unable to move in either direction.

Only by enduring and resolving the constraint can stability return. Direct force is no longer effective.

26. Great Accumulation (大畜 Dà Chù)

Trigrams

Above
☶ Gèn (Mountain)
Below
☰ Qián (Heaven)

The Symbolism of Hexagram 26

Hexagram 大畜 (Dà Chù) describes the containment of great force. Strength is not expressed outwardly but held, stored, and disciplined until the proper moment.

Hexagram 26 Judgment

The Judgment reads:
Original Chinese:
大畜,利貞。不家食,吉。利涉大川。
(Dà chù, lì zhēn. Bù jiā shí, jí. Lì shè dà chuān.)
English Translation:
"Great accumulation. It is beneficial to remain aligned. Not eating at home brings good fortune. It is beneficial to cross the great river."

Power is being gathered and restrained. Alignment ensures that what is accumulated remains usable and not destructive.

Not eating at home indicates reliance on a larger order rather than personal reserves. When strength is properly contained, it becomes possible to undertake significant movement.

Hexagram 26 Image

The Image reads:
Original Chinese:
天在山中,大畜。君子以多識前言往行,以畜其德。
(Tiān zài shān zhōng, dà chù. Jūn zǐ yǐ duō shí qián yán wǎng xíng, yǐ chù qí dé.)
English Translation:
"Heaven within the mountain: great accumulation. The superior person gathers past words and actions to store their strength."

Heaven represents immense force; the mountain contains it. This is not suppression, but structured holding.

Through study and reflection, strength is accumulated internally and made stable.

Peace and wisdom on your journey!
