The Symbolism of Hexagram 43
Hexagram 夬 (Guài) describes resolution—pressure has accumulated to a point where it must be released through decisive action.
Lake above heaven shows upward pressure exceeding containment. The system can no longer hold what has built up. A clear break or declaration becomes necessary.
Hexagram 43 Judgment
夬,揚于王庭,孚號有厲,告自邑,不利即戎,利有攸往。
(Guài, yáng yú wáng tíng, fú hào yǒu lì, gào zì yì, bù lì jí róng, lì yǒu yōu wǎng.)
"Resolution. It is proclaimed in the court of the governing authority. Risk present. It is announced from one's own city. It is not favorable to engage in armed confrontation. It is favorable to move with direction."
Accumulated pressure requires explicit resolution. The issue cannot remain internal and must be declared.
However, escalation into conflict is not the correct path. The system resolves through clarity and decisive direction, not aggression.

澤上于天,夬。君子以施祿及下,居德則忌。
(Zé shàng yú tiān, guài. Jūn zǐ yǐ shī lù jí xià, jū dé zé jì.)
"The lake rises to heaven: resolution. The superior person extends benefits below and remains wary of resting on virtue alone."
When accumulation surpasses structural limits, release becomes unavoidable.
Proper resolution distributes what has built up rather than allowing rupture. Balance is restored by discharge, not suppression.
Line 3 Changing
壯于頄,有凶。君子夬夬,獨行遇雨,若濡有慍,無咎。
(Zhuàng yú kuí, yǒu xiōng. Jūn zǐ guài guài, dú xíng yù yǔ, ruò rú yǒu yùn, wú jiù.)
"Force becomes excessive: unfavorable outcome. The superior person remains decisively resolute. Walking alone, one meets rain and is dampened with irritation, yet there is no error."
Overextension creates instability, yet action still must be taken.
Proceeding alone through adverse conditions may cause friction, but the action remains correct.
Line 5 Changing
苋陸夬夬,中行无咎。
(Xiàn lù guài guài, zhōng xíng wú jiù.)
"Decisiveness is maintained with balance. No error."
Firm resolution is required, but must remain centered.
Balanced decisiveness prevents overcorrection.

The Symbolism of Hexagram 54
Hexagram 歸妹 (Guī Mèi) describes entering into an established structure without occupying the primary position. The dynamic is not one of mutual formation, but of insertion into something already defined, where roles and hierarchy are uneven.
Thunder above the lake creates movement over openness, but without stable alignment between inner and outer forces. The result is activation without proper grounding. Participation is possible, but it lacks full authority, and therefore must be handled with awareness of limitation and consequence.
Hexagram 54 Judgment
歸妹,征凶,无攸利。
(Guī mèi, zhēng xiōng, wú yōu lì.)
"Subordinate union. To advance brings unfavorable outcome. No direction is favorable in forcing progress."
This situation arises when entry occurs without proper alignment of role, timing, or authority. The structure itself is not inherently wrong, but the position within it is limited and constrained.
Attempting to push forward as if one held full standing creates imbalance and leads to negative outcomes. The system does not support independent advancement from this position. Stability can only be maintained by recognizing the limits of one's role and avoiding overreach.
Hexagram 54 Image
澤上有雷,歸妹。君子以永終知敝。
(Zé shàng yǒu léi, guī mèi. Jūn zǐ yǐ yǒng zhōng zhī bì.)
"Thunder stirs above the lake: subordinate union. The superior person keeps the end in view and knows what will fail."
The interaction of thunder and lake produces activity, but not durable structure. Movement arises quickly, yet it lacks the foundation needed for long-term stability.
The superior person evaluates not just the beginning, but the eventual outcome. By projecting forward, they recognize inherent weaknesses in the arrangement. This foresight allows them to avoid entanglement in situations that cannot sustain themselves.
Peace and wisdom on your journey!
