I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 1: The Creative
Welcome to Hexagram 1, The Creative. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 1.1.5 means Hexagram 1 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 1
Hexagram 1, The Creative (乾 Qián), is the only figure composed entirely of yang lines — Heaven doubled, above and below. This repetition gives the figure a single, continuous structural character: pure initiating force pressing outward through unbroken strength. Any moving line introduces yin into that uniform configuration, while changes in the lower or upper trigram differentiate what had been identical halves.
In the table, each changing line inverts from yang to yin, and the altered six-line figure resolves into a second hexagram. The complete mapping includes six outcomes produced by one moving line, fifty-seven multi-line combinations, and the unchanging reading. In that final case no line is inverted, no resulting figure is formed, and the Judgment of Hexagram 1 alone governs.
The transformation at maximum change is especially clear: with all six lines inverted, The Creative becomes its full complement, Hexagram 2, The Receptive. Hexagram 2 is also its King Wen partner. Because Hexagram 1 is vertically symmetric and therefore reads identically upside down, the pair is formed by complementation rather than inversion — a structural property shared with seven other figures.
