About the Transformations of Hexagram 12

Hexagram 12, Standstill (否 Pǐ), places Earth below Heaven. Its lower half is entirely yin and its upper half entirely yang, separating the two trigram structures at the central boundary. A change in lines 1–3 introduces differentiation into Earth; a change in lines 4–6 interrupts Heaven's continuity. When moving lines occur in both ranges, the distribution of receptive and initiating lines changes across the whole figure.

In every transformational entry, each indicated line reverses polarity and the finished pattern resolves into a second hexagram. Six rows isolate movement at one position, while fifty-seven enumerate all multi-line combinations. The table's unchanging reading records the only case without inversion: the original six-line figure remains intact, and the Judgment of Hexagram 12 alone governs without a resulting hexagram.

If all six lines change, Standstill resolves into Hexagram 11, Peace, its complete complement. Peace is likewise its partner in the King Wen sequence, where the mechanism is inversion. Turning Standstill upside down exchanges the vertical positions of Heaven and Earth and yields Hexagram 11. Thus both total polarity reversal and rotation reach the same neighboring figure, although one changes line types and the other reverses their order.
