About the Transformations of Hexagram 19

Hexagram 19, Approaching (臨 Lín), sets Lake below Earth. Lake's open pattern occupies the lower trigram, and Earth's three yin lines form a uniform receptive field above. Movement in lines 1–3 reshapes the lower structure of exchange; movement in lines 4–6 differentiates the upper field. Changes distributed through both halves revise the relation between openness at the base and broad receptivity in the outer configuration.

For each transformation in the table, every changing line inverts and the resulting six-line pattern is matched to its second hexagram. Six cases arise from exactly one moving line, while fifty-seven arise from two or more moving positions. The unchanging reading stands alongside them: since no line changes polarity, the original figure remains the only one present and the Judgment of Hexagram 19 alone governs.

At maximum transformation, all six positions reverse and Approaching becomes Hexagram 33, Withdrawal, its complete complement. Its King Wen pair follows a different relation: Hexagram 19 is paired with Hexagram 20, Viewing, through inversion. Turning Approaching upside down yields Viewing's line pattern. The complement therefore links advance with a polar configuration elsewhere in the sequence, while rotational inversion establishes the consecutive pair.
