About the Transformations of Hexagram 20

Hexagram 20, Viewing (觀 Guān), places Earth below Wind. The lower trigram contributes an entirely yin, receptive base, while Wind supplies gradual penetration in the upper three positions. Low-line movement differentiates Earth's uniform structure; high-line movement modifies Wind. Combinations crossing the trigram boundary reconstruct both the receptive ground and the pattern operating above it, expanding the transformation space beyond changes confined to either half.

Each line designated as changing in the table reverses polarity, and the completed figure then resolves into a second hexagram. The mapping includes all six transformations with one moving line and fifty-seven combinations involving several moving lines. It also includes the unchanging reading as the zero-movement case: no resulting hexagram is generated, and the Judgment of Hexagram 20 alone governs.

If all six positions change, Viewing resolves into Hexagram 34, Great Force, its line-by-line complement. The neighboring King Wen partner is Hexagram 19, Approaching, reached through inversion rather than complementation. Turning Hexagram 20 upside down produces the structure of Hexagram 19. These relations separate two forms of structural contrast: complete polarity reversal leads to Great Force, while reversed vertical orientation leads to Approaching.
