I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 25: Without Contrivance

Yin-Yang symbol

Welcome to Hexagram 25, Without Contrivance. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 25.1.5 means Hexagram 25 with lines 1 and 5 changing.

About the Transformations of Hexagram 25

Hexagram 25, Without Contrivance (無妄 Wú Wàng), places Thunder below Heaven. The lower trigram provides an activating pattern at the figure's base, while Heaven contributes three continuous yang lines above. Changes among lines 1–3 reconstruct Thunder's initial movement; changes among lines 4–6 differentiate Heaven's uniform strength. Transformations spanning both ranges alter the relation between spontaneous activation below and sustained initiating force above.

Each outcome in the table follows from inverting every line designated as changing and matching the completed six-line pattern to a second hexagram. Six entries show the effects of one moving position, and fifty-seven cover all combinations of multiple moving lines. The unchanging reading completes the set: no line changes polarity, no resulting figure is formed, and the Judgment of Hexagram 25 alone governs.

When all six lines invert, Without Contrivance resolves into Hexagram 46, Ascending, its complete complement. Its King Wen partner is instead Hexagram 26, Great Accumulation, related through inversion. Turning Hexagram 25 upside down produces the line pattern of Hexagram 26. The complement and the sequence pair therefore register different structural operations, one reversing every polarity and the other reversing vertical order.
