I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 31: Resonance
Welcome to Hexagram 31, Resonance. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 31.1.5 means Hexagram 31 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 31
Hexagram 31, Resonance (咸 Xián), places Mountain below Lake. Stillness structures the lower trigram, while openness and exchange occupy the upper three positions. Changes in lines 1–3 modify Mountain and the figure's grounded half; changes in lines 4–6 reshape Lake. Transformations involving both ranges alter the structural relation between a bounded lower form and the responsive upper field.
In the table, every changing line reverses polarity, after which the full pattern resolves into a second hexagram. Six entries display the outcomes of exactly one moving line, and fifty-seven account for combinations of two through six lines. The unchanging reading completes the inventory: since the original configuration remains fixed, no second figure is generated and the Judgment of Hexagram 31 alone governs.
Total line inversion transforms Resonance into Hexagram 41, Decrease, its complete complement. Resonance's King Wen partner is instead Hexagram 32, Continuity, generated through inversion. Turning Hexagram 31 upside down reverses the order of its six positions and produces Hexagram 32. The two notable relations thus separate global polarity change, which leads to Decrease, from rotational correspondence, which establishes the consecutive pair.
