About the Transformations of Hexagram 33

Hexagram 33, Withdrawal (遯 Dùn), places Mountain below Heaven. Mountain provides stillness and a defined boundary in the lower trigram, while Heaven contributes three continuous yang lines above. Changes among lines 1–3 reconstruct the lower pattern of containment; changes among lines 4–6 differentiate Heaven's uniform strength. Movement across both halves revises the relation between a bounded foundation and sustained force in the upper structure.

Every result in the table is formed by inverting each line marked as changing and matching the completed six-line pattern to a second hexagram. Six entries isolate the effect of one moving line, while fifty-seven cover all multi-line combinations. The unchanging reading supplies the remaining case: no line reverses polarity, no resulting figure appears, and the Judgment of Hexagram 33 alone governs.

When all six positions invert, Withdrawal resolves into Hexagram 19, Approaching, its complete complement. Its King Wen partner is instead Hexagram 34, Great Force, related through inversion. Turning Hexagram 33 upside down produces the line pattern of Hexagram 34. Complementation therefore connects Withdrawal to a figure elsewhere in the sequence, while rotation establishes its immediate neighboring pair.
