About the Transformations of Hexagram 39

Hexagram 39, Impediment (蹇 Jiǎn), sets Mountain in the lower trigram and Water in the upper. Mountain provides a bounded, still foundation, while Water introduces depth into the outer half. Low-line transformations reconstruct Mountain and its containing structure; high-line transformations reshape Water. Changes spanning both trigrams revise the relationship between resistance below and depth above throughout the complete six-line figure.

To calculate each listed outcome, every changing line reverses polarity and the recomposed pattern is matched to its second hexagram. The table contains six single-line transformations and fifty-seven multi-line combinations. It also preserves the unchanging reading as a distinct case: no line inverts, no secondary configuration is formed, and the Judgment of Hexagram 39 alone governs.

When change extends through all six positions, Impediment becomes Hexagram 38, Divergence, its complete complement. The adjacent King Wen partner is Hexagram 40, Release, reached through inversion. Turning Hexagram 39 upside down produces the line order of Release and establishes their consecutive relationship. Here the all-line complement lies immediately before the pair, while rotational correspondence points immediately after it.
