I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 45: Gathering
Welcome to Hexagram 45, Gathering. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 45.1.5 means Hexagram 45 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 45
Hexagram 45, Gathering (萃 Cuì), combines Earth below with Lake above. Earth's three yin lines create a uniform receptive base, while Lake supplies openness and exchange in the upper half. Changes at positions 1–3 differentiate Earth; changes at positions 4–6 reshape Lake. Multi-line movement across the trigram boundary reconstructs both the field of receptivity below and the open structure through which it is gathered above.
The table derives each transformed figure by inverting every moving line and identifying the resulting six-line pattern as a second hexagram. It covers six single-line changes and fifty-seven combinations involving two or more positions. Alongside these stands the unchanging reading: because no line changes polarity, the original configuration remains alone and the Judgment of Hexagram 45 alone governs.
Changing all six positions converts Gathering into Hexagram 26, Great Accumulation, its complete complement. Its King Wen sequence partner is instead Hexagram 46, Ascending, generated by inversion. Rotation of Gathering from top to bottom produces Ascending's line pattern and establishes their adjacent relation. The all-line complement and the received pair therefore express separate structural correspondences rather than the same transformation.
