I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 46: Ascending
Welcome to Hexagram 46, Ascending. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 46.1.5 means Hexagram 46 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 46
Hexagram 46, Ascending (升 Shēng), sets Wind in the lower trigram and Earth in the upper. Wind gives the base a pattern of gradual entry, while the three yin lines of Earth establish uniform receptivity above. Low-line changes reshape Wind; high-line changes introduce differentiation into Earth. When movement spans both trigrams, the transformation revises the relation between penetration from below and the open field occupying the upper half.
Every line marked as changing in the table reverses polarity, after which the completed configuration resolves into another hexagram. Six entries show single-line outcomes, and fifty-seven list all possible multi-line combinations. The unchanging reading completes the table: without moving lines, no second figure appears and the Judgment of Hexagram 46 alone governs.
Full polarity reversal carries Ascending to Hexagram 25, Without Contrivance, its exact complement. The King Wen sequence pairs Ascending with Hexagram 45, Gathering, through inversion. Turning Hexagram 46 upside down generates Gathering's structure and creates the neighboring pair. Complementation therefore links Ascending to an earlier figure, whereas reversed vertical order links it directly to the preceding sequence number.
