About the Transformations of Hexagram 49

Hexagram 49, Recasting (革 Gé), combines Fire below with Lake above. Fire gives the lower trigram an articulated pattern around its central yin line, while Lake places openness and exchange in the upper three positions. Low-line changes reconstruct Fire and the figure's internal differentiation; high-line changes reshape Lake. Movement across both trigrams alters the complete relation between structured clarity below and openness above.

Every changing line identified in the table inverts, and the recomposed six-line pattern then resolves into a second hexagram. Six entries display outcomes produced by one moving position, while fifty-seven cover all combinations of multiple moving lines. The unchanging reading provides the remaining case: no polarity changes, no resulting figure is formed, and the Judgment of Hexagram 49 alone governs.

Reversing all six positions transforms Recasting into Hexagram 4, Immaturity, its complete complement. Its King Wen partner is instead Hexagram 50, The Cauldron, related through inversion. Turning Hexagram 49 upside down produces The Cauldron's line structure and establishes the consecutive pair. The complement and the sequence partner therefore arise from distinct operations: total polarity reversal and reversed vertical order.
