About the Transformations of Hexagram 51

Hexagram 51, Shock (震 Zhèn), is Thunder doubled above and below. Each trigram begins with a yang line beneath two yin lines, so repetition carries the same activating structure through both halves. Movement limited to lines 1–3 differentiates the lower Thunder from the upper; movement limited to lines 4–6 differentiates the upper from the lower. Changes across both ranges can reconstruct or replace the doubled pattern as a whole.

For every result in the table, each designated changing line reverses polarity and the completed six-line figure resolves into a second hexagram. The table enumerates six cases with one moving line and fifty-seven with several moving lines. It also includes the unchanging reading, where both Thunder trigrams remain intact and the Judgment of Hexagram 51 alone governs without a resulting figure.

Total line inversion transforms Shock into Hexagram 57, Penetration, its all-six-lines complement. Shock's King Wen partner is instead Hexagram 52, Stillness, connected through inversion. Turning Hexagram 51 upside down produces Stillness's pattern: the initiating yang positions become the enclosing upper positions of the reversed figure. Complementation thus reaches Penetration, whereas rotation establishes the adjacent pair with Stillness.
