I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 57: Penetration

Yin-Yang symbol

Welcome to Hexagram 57, Penetration. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 57.1.5 means Hexagram 57 with lines 1 and 5 changing.

About the Transformations of Hexagram 57

Hexagram 57, Penetration (巽 Xùn), is Wind doubled in the lower and upper trigrams. Each Wind trigram begins with yin beneath two yang lines, so the repeated structure carries gradual entry through both halves. Changes among lines 1–3 differentiate the lower Wind from the upper; changes among lines 4–6 differentiate the upper from the lower. Movement across both ranges can reconstruct or replace the doubled pattern as a whole.

Every outcome in the table is produced by inverting each line designated as changing and matching the completed six-line figure to a second hexagram. Six entries isolate one moving line, while fifty-seven enumerate all multi-line combinations. The unchanging reading completes the mapping: neither Wind trigram changes, no resulting figure is formed, and the Judgment of Hexagram 57 alone governs.

When all six positions invert, Penetration resolves into Hexagram 51, Shock, its complete complement. Its King Wen partner is instead Hexagram 58, Joyous Exchange, related through inversion. Turning Hexagram 57 upside down produces the line structure of Hexagram 58 and establishes the consecutive pair. Total polarity reversal therefore reaches Shock, while reversed vertical order reaches its neighboring partner.
