About the Transformations of Hexagram 58
Hexagram 58, Joyous Exchange (兌 Duì), consists of Lake doubled above and below. Each Lake trigram has two yang lines beneath an open yin line, and repetition extends that same structure through the figure's lower and upper halves. Low-line movement reshapes the lower Lake alone; high-line movement reshapes the upper. Changes spanning the midpoint break or reconstitute the correspondence between the doubled trigrams.
For every entry in the table, all changing lines reverse polarity and the recomposed configuration resolves into another hexagram. The table contains six single-line transformations and fifty-seven multi-line combinations. It also retains the unchanging reading, where the two Lake trigrams remain intact, no secondary figure appears, and the Judgment of Hexagram 58 alone governs.
Full line inversion converts Joyous Exchange into Hexagram 52, Stillness, its exact complement. The King Wen sequence pairs it with Hexagram 57, Penetration, through inversion instead. Rotation from top to bottom turns Hexagram 58 into Penetration and creates the neighboring pair. The complement consequently links it to another doubled-trigram figure, whereas vertical inversion connects it to the adjacent member of its received pair.
