About the Transformations of Hexagram 62

Hexagram 62, Small Exceeding (小過 Xiǎo Guò), combines Mountain below with Thunder above. Its paired yin lines at the base and top enclose two central yang lines, producing vertical symmetry across the six positions. Changes in the lower trigram reconstruct Mountain and the lower enclosure; changes in the upper trigram reshape Thunder. Movement across both ranges alters the distribution between the concentrated center and the enclosing outer lines.

For each transformation in the table, every changing line reverses polarity and the completed figure resolves into another hexagram. The entries comprise six single-line changes and fifty-seven multi-line combinations. They are joined by the unchanging reading, where all six positions remain as given, no resulting figure is produced, and the Judgment of Hexagram 62 alone governs.

At maximum change, Small Exceeding becomes Hexagram 61, Inner Alignment, its exact complement and King Wen pair partner. Hexagram 62 is vertically symmetric, so turning it upside down reproduces the same figure rather than its neighbor. Complementation consequently supplies the pairing mechanism. Reading identically in either vertical orientation is an exceptional structural property shared by Small Exceeding and seven other hexagrams.
