21. Biting Through (噬嗑 Shì Kè)
Trigrams

- ☲ Lí (Fire)
- Below
- ☳ Zhèn (Thunder)
The Symbolism of Hexagram 21
Hexagram 噬嗑 (Shì Kè) describes removing what obstructs by forceful resolution. It involves judgment, enforcement, and the imposition of consequences to restore order.
Hexagram 21 Judgment
噬嗑,亨。利用狱。
(Shì kè, hēng. Lì yòng yù.)
"Biting through. Passage. Favorable to apply judgments."
An obstruction is present that cannot be negotiated away. It must be broken through.
This requires the use of formal judgment and consequence. When enforcement is applied correctly, resolution is achieved.
Hexagram 21 Image
雷電噬嗑。先王以明罰勑法。
(Léi diàn shì kè. Xiān wáng yǐ míng fá chì fǎ.)
"Thunder and lightning: this is biting through. The former rulers clarified penalties and established order."
Thunder initiates, lightning illuminates. Together they represent action combined with clarity.
Punishment is not arbitrary—it must be visible, defined, and consistently applied in order to restore structure.
Line 3 Changing
噬腊肉,遇毒。小吝,无咎。
(Shì là ròu, yù dú. Xiǎo lìn, wú jiù.)
"Biting dried meat, encountering poison. Minor difficulty, no fault."
The obstruction contains hidden complications. What appears simple proves dangerous.
There is some trouble, but with awareness, no lasting harm results.
Line 5 Changing
噬乾肉,得黄金,貞厲,无咎。
(Shì gān ròu, dé huáng jīn, zhēn lì, wú jiù.)
"Biting dried meat, obtaining gold. Firmness carries risk, but no fault."
Resolution yields something valuable, but not without danger.
Even when the action is correct, it carries weight and consequence. Awareness prevents error.
Line 6 Changing
何校滅耳,凶。
(Hé xiào miè ěr, xiōng.)
"The neck is constrained, injuring the ears. Misfortune."
Punishment becomes excessive. The corrective force is no longer proportionate.
When enforcement goes too far, it produces harm and leads to misfortune.
Changing to:
49. Transformation (革 Gé)
Trigrams
- Above
- ☱ Duì (Lake)
- Below
- ☲ Lí (Fire)
The Symbolism of Hexagram 49
Hexagram 革 (Gé) describes transformation—fundamental change applied at the correct moment. It is not gradual growth, but decisive restructuring when conditions demand it.
Fire within the lake shows internal pressure building beneath a contained surface. When the timing is correct, change becomes inevitable.
Hexagram 49 Judgment
革,巳日乃孚。元亨,利貞,悔亡。
(Gé, sì rì nǎi fú. Yuán hēng, lì zhēn, huǐ wáng.)
"Transformation. At the proper time, there is alignment and trust. Fundamental success. Stability is beneficial. Regret disappears."
This hexagram describes necessary change that must occur at the correct moment. Timing is critical—transformation cannot be forced prematurely.
When the moment is right, alignment forms naturally and resistance falls away. Stability during change ensures success and removes prior tension.
Hexagram 49 Image
澤中有火,革。君子以治曆明時。
(Zé zhōng yǒu huǒ, gé. Jūn zǐ yǐ zhì lì míng shí.)
"Fire within the lake: transformation. Time must be clearly understood and correctly applied."
Transformation depends on timing. Change is not continuous—it occurs at defined intervals when conditions align.
Clarity of timing determines whether change succeeds or fails.
Peace and wisdom on your journey!
