41. Decrease (損 Sǔn)
Trigrams

- ☶ Gèn (Mountain)
- Below
- ☱ Duì (Lake)
The Symbolism of Hexagram 41
Hexagram 損 (Sǔn) describes reduction—removing excess to restore balance. The system is simplified by decreasing what is unnecessary.
Mountain above lake shows containment and limiting of what lies below. Reduction is not loss for its own sake, but a structural rebalancing.
Hexagram 41 Judgment
損,有孚,元吉,无咎,可貞,利有攸往。曷之用,二簋可用享。
(Sǔn, yǒu fú, yuán jí, wú jiù, kě zhēn, lì yǒu yōu wǎng. Hé zhī yòng, èr guǐ kě yòng xiǎng.)
"Decrease. With sincerity, the result is favorable. No fault. Stability is possible. Movement is beneficial. What is required is minimal—simple offerings are sufficient."
Reduction is effective when it is intentional and grounded in sincerity. The system does not require excess to function properly.
The final clause is critical: success does not depend on scale. Even minimal resources, correctly applied, are sufficient. Decrease simplifies without undermining function.
Hexagram 41 Image
山下有澤,損。君子以懲忿窒欲。
(Shān xià yǒu zé, sǔn. Jūn zǐ yǐ chéng fèn zhì yù.)
"A lake beneath the mountain: decrease. Excess is constrained and reduced."
The mountain limits the lake, preventing overflow. This is controlled reduction.
The system improves by removing excess pressure and unnecessary expansion. Reduction restores stability.
Line 2 Changing
利貞,征凶,弗損,益之。
(Lì zhēn, zhēng xiōng, fú sǔn, yì zhī.)
"Stability is favorable. Advancing leads to difficulty. If reduction is not applied, imbalance increases."
This line warns against unnecessary forward movement. The system does not need expansion—it needs correction.
If reduction is avoided, imbalance grows. Restraint preserves stability.
Line 5 Changing
或益之,十朋之龜弗克違,元吉。
(Huò yì zhī, shí péng zhī guī fú kè wéi, yuán jí.)
"Reduction creates conditions for increase. Strong support cannot be resisted. Favorable outcome."
Proper decrease leads to natural increase. This is structural compensation.
The system becomes aligned in such a way that support emerges automatically. This is not forced—it is a result of correct reduction.
Line 6 Changing
弗損,益之,無咎,貞吉,利有攸往,得臣无家。
(Fú sǔn, yì zhī, wú jiù, zhēn jí, lì yǒu yōu wǎng, dé chén wú jiā.)
"No further reduction is needed. Increase follows. No fault. Stability brings good outcome. Movement is beneficial. Support is gained without dependency."
Reduction has reached its correct limit. Beyond this point, further decrease would be harmful.
Now the system begins to expand again, but from a stable base. Support is integrated without creating new imbalance.

3. Difficulty at the Beginning (屯 Zhūn)
Trigrams
- Above
- ☵ Kǎn (Water)
- Below
- ☳ Zhèn (Thunder)
The Symbolism of Hexagram 3
Hexagram 屯 (Zhūn) describes the unsettled state at the beginning of development. Movement is present, but conditions are not yet stable. Growth is possible, though it emerges slowly and unevenly.
In human terms, this reflects the early phase of a process where direction is unclear and obstacles are frequent. Progress depends on patience, structure, and the ability to work through uncertainty without forcing results.
Hexagram 3 Judgment
元亨,利贞,勿用有攸往,利建侯。
(Yuán hēng, lì zhēn, wù yòng yǒu yōu wǎng, lì jiàn hóu.)
"Originating success. It is favorable to remain steady. Do not set out yet. It is beneficial to establish leadership."
This describes a beginning that contains potential, but is not yet ready for full movement. Stability is more important than action, and premature advancement leads to difficulty. The reference to establishing leadership points to creating structure and support before proceeding.
The emphasis is on preparation. By organizing people and conditions first, future progress becomes possible and more secure.
Hexagram 3 Image
云雷,屯。君子以经纶。
(Yún léi, zhūn. Jūn zǐ yǐ jīng lún.)
"Clouds and thunder: difficulty at the beginning. The superior person arranges and weaves things into order."
Clouds and thunder suggest movement that has not yet settled into clear form. Energy is building, but not yet coordinated. This is a time of complexity rather than clarity.
The response is to organize rather than force outcomes. By putting structure in place, confusion gradually becomes workable and direction emerges.
Peace and wisdom on your journey!
