I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 13: Union of People
Welcome to Hexagram 13, Union of People. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 13.1.5 means Hexagram 13 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 13
Hexagram 13, Union of People (同人 Tóng Rén), combines Fire below with Heaven above. Fire's differentiated pattern occupies the lower three positions, while Heaven contributes three unbroken yang lines above. Low-line transformations alter the internal clarity of Fire; high-line transformations introduce openings into Heaven's continuous structure. Changes distributed across both trigrams recast the connection between a differentiated lower center and a uniform upper field.
The table derives every resulting figure through line inversion. Each marked changing line reverses, and the completed pattern resolves into a second hexagram. Its entries comprise six single-line changes and fifty-seven multi-line combinations, together exhausting all nonempty subsets of the six positions. The unchanging reading is included separately; with no moving line, the Judgment of Hexagram 13 alone governs.
At full transformation, all six lines invert and Union of People becomes Hexagram 7, The Army, its exact complement. Its King Wen pair partner is instead Hexagram 14, Great Possession. That relation is generated by inversion: when Hexagram 13 is turned upside down, the pattern becomes Hexagram 14. The complement therefore connects this figure to an earlier sequence position, while rotation connects it to its immediate neighbor.
