About the Transformations of Hexagram 14

Hexagram 14, Great Possession (大有 Dà Yǒu), places Heaven below Fire. The three continuous lines of Heaven establish the lower trigram, and Fire's centered yin line differentiates the upper structure. Movement in the lower positions breaks or retains Heaven's uniform strength; movement above reshapes Fire. A transformation involving both halves changes the distribution of line types as well as the relation between the strong foundation and the articulated upper trigram.

Every changing line listed in the table inverts before the new six-line figure is matched to another hexagram. The enumeration covers six cases with exactly one moving line and fifty-seven cases with several moving lines. It also preserves the unchanging reading, in which none of the six positions reverses and the Judgment of Hexagram 14 alone governs.

Reversing all six line polarities transforms Great Possession into its complement, Hexagram 8, Holding Together. The neighboring King Wen relation points elsewhere: Hexagram 14 is paired with Hexagram 13, Union of People, through inversion. Rotation of the complete figure produces that partner, exchanging its vertical organization without reversing each line's polarity. Accordingly, the complement and pair distinguish global line reversal from upside-down structural correspondence.
