I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 24: Return
Welcome to Hexagram 24, Return. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 24.1.5 means Hexagram 24 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 24
Hexagram 24, Return (復 Fù), combines Thunder below with Earth above. Its single yang line stands at the base within Thunder, followed by five yin lines extending through the receptive upper trigram. Low-position changes reconfigure the point of activation and the rest of Thunder; high-position changes differentiate Earth. Transformations spanning both halves redistribute the contrast between initial movement below and sustained receptivity above.
In the table, each line identified as changing reverses polarity and the resulting pattern resolves into another hexagram. Six entries show what follows from one moving line; fifty-seven cover every multi-line combination of the six positions. The table also marks the unchanging reading, where no line moves, the original figure remains unresolved into another, and the Judgment of Hexagram 24 alone governs.
With all six lines inverted, Return becomes Hexagram 44, Encounter, its exact complement. Its neighboring partner in the King Wen sequence is Hexagram 23, Stripping Away, produced by inversion. Turning Return upside down transfers its lone yang line from the first position to the sixth and yields Stripping Away. The sequence pair is consequently rotational, whereas the relation to Encounter rests upon complete reversal of line polarity.
