I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 35: Advancement

Yin-Yang symbol

Welcome to Hexagram 35, Advancement. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 35.1.5 means Hexagram 35 with lines 1 and 5 changing.

About the Transformations of Hexagram 35

Hexagram 35, Advancement (晉 Jìn), sets Earth below Fire. The lower trigram forms a fully yin, receptive base, while Fire supplies a differentiated upper pattern centered on one yin line. Changes at positions 1–3 introduce structure into Earth; changes at positions 4–6 reshape Fire. Movement distributed across both trigrams reconstructs the relation between an open foundation and articulated clarity above.

For every entry in the table, each changing line inverts and the completed configuration resolves into a second hexagram. Six transformations arise from exactly one moving line, while fifty-seven arise from combinations of multiple positions. The table also records the unchanging reading: with no polarity reversal, the original figure remains alone and the Judgment of Hexagram 35 alone governs.

If all six lines change, Advancement becomes Hexagram 5, Waiting (Nourishment), its exact complement. Its adjacent King Wen partner is Hexagram 36, Obscured Light, generated by inversion. Turning Advancement upside down produces the pattern of Obscured Light and establishes the consecutive pair. The all-line complement and the rotational partner therefore describe separate structural correspondences.
