I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 36: Obscured Light

Yin-Yang symbol

Welcome to Hexagram 36, Obscured Light. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 36.1.5 means Hexagram 36 with lines 1 and 5 changing.

About the Transformations of Hexagram 36

Hexagram 36, Obscured Light (明夷 Míng Yí), places Fire below Earth. Fire's articulated pattern occupies the lower three positions, while Earth's uniform receptivity extends across the upper trigram. Low-position movement modifies the internal structure of Fire; high-position movement differentiates Earth. Combinations crossing the trigram boundary change both the lower articulation and the receptive field that encloses it above.

Each line identified as changing in the table reverses polarity, and the resulting six-line pattern then resolves into another hexagram. The table contains six cases with a single moving line and fifty-seven with multiple moving lines. Its unchanging entry represents the absence of inversion: no resulting figure is produced, and the Judgment of Hexagram 36 alone governs.

Changing every position converts Obscured Light into Hexagram 6, Conflict, its full complement. The King Wen sequence connects it instead to Hexagram 35, Advancement, through inversion. When Hexagram 36 is turned upside down, its line order becomes the figure of Advancement. Thus complete polarity reversal links it to Conflict, whereas vertical rotation links it to the neighboring member of its received pair.
