I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 38: Divergence
Welcome to Hexagram 38, Divergence. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 38.1.5 means Hexagram 38 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 38
Hexagram 38, Divergence (睽 Kuí), places Lake below Fire. Openness and exchange structure the lower trigram, while Fire supplies differentiated clarity above. Changes in the first three positions modify Lake; changes in the upper three modify Fire. When moving lines occur on both sides of the midpoint, the transformation alters the entire relation between receptive exchange below and articulated distinction in the upper field.
Every changing line represented in the table inverts, after which the finished six-line configuration resolves into a second hexagram. Six entries isolate single-line movement, and fifty-seven cover the combinations formed by multiple moving lines. The unchanging reading completes the mapping: all line values remain as cast, and the Judgment of Hexagram 38 alone governs without a resulting hexagram.
Full reversal of polarity changes Divergence into Hexagram 39, Impediment, its exact complement. Its King Wen pair partner is instead Hexagram 37, Household Order, produced through inversion. Rotating Divergence from top to bottom yields Household Order's line pattern. Complement and pair consequently connect the figure along different structural axes: all-line reversal leads to Impediment, while upside-down correspondence leads to its sequence neighbor.
