About the Transformations of Hexagram 44
Hexagram 44, Encounter (姤 Gòu), places Wind below Heaven. A yin line at the base enters a structure otherwise composed of five yang lines, while Heaven remains uninterrupted in the upper trigram. Low-position movement reconfigures Wind and the exceptional first line; high-position movement differentiates Heaven. Changes spanning both halves alter the distribution between the initial opening below and sustained strength above.
Each changing line represented in the table inverts, and the completed six-line configuration then resolves into another hexagram. Six entries isolate a single moving line, while fifty-seven account for every multi-line combination. The table's unchanging entry records the absence of inversion: no resulting figure is produced, and the Judgment of Hexagram 44 alone governs.
When all lines reverse, Encounter resolves into Hexagram 24, Return, its full complement. The adjacent King Wen partner is Hexagram 43, Resolution, reached through inversion. Turning Hexagram 44 upside down transfers its sole yin line from the first position to the sixth and yields Resolution. The sequence pair is consequently rotational, while the relation to Return depends on reversing the polarity of every position.
