About the Transformations of Hexagram 52

Hexagram 52, Stillness (艮 Gèn), consists of Mountain doubled in the lower and upper trigrams. Each Mountain has two yin lines beneath a terminating yang line, and their repetition gives both halves the same bounded form. Low-line transformations reshape only the lower Mountain; high-line transformations reshape only the upper. Movement spanning the midpoint breaks or reconstitutes the correspondence between the repeated structures.

Each moving line represented in the table inverts, after which the final configuration resolves into another hexagram. Six entries isolate changes at one position, while fifty-seven list every multi-line combination. The unchanging reading completes the inventory: no line moves, the doubled Mountain figure remains unchanged, and the Judgment of Hexagram 52 alone governs.

With every position reversed, Stillness becomes Hexagram 58, Joyous Exchange, its complete complement. The King Wen sequence pairs Stillness with Hexagram 51, Shock, through inversion. Rotating Hexagram 52 from top to bottom produces Shock's line pattern and establishes their neighboring relation. The all-line complement therefore connects Stillness with another doubled-trigram figure, while vertical inversion connects it with its immediate partner.
