I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 53: Development
Welcome to Hexagram 53, Development. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 53.1.5 means Hexagram 53 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 53
Hexagram 53, Development (漸 Jiàn), places Mountain below Wind. Mountain establishes stillness and a bounded base, while Wind supplies gradual penetration above. Changes in lines 1–3 reconstruct Mountain and the figure's lower stages; changes in lines 4–6 modify Wind. When movement occurs in both trigrams, the transformation alters the relation between stable foundation and progressive entry throughout the six-line structure.
The table calculates each outcome by reversing every line identified as changing and matching the recomposed figure to its resulting hexagram. Six entries show single-line transformations, and fifty-seven encompass all multi-line combinations. Its unchanging entry records the case with no inversion, where no second figure is produced and the Judgment of Hexagram 53 alone governs.
Changing all six positions carries Development to Hexagram 54, Secondary Marriage, its full complement. Secondary Marriage is also the King Wen pair partner, where the mechanism is inversion: turning Hexagram 53 upside down produces Hexagram 54. In this case both complete polarity reversal and vertical rotation reach the same neighboring figure, although the two transformations remain structurally distinguishable.
