About the Transformations of Hexagram 54

Hexagram 54, Secondary Marriage (歸妹 Guī Mèi), combines Lake below with Thunder above. Openness and exchange occupy the lower trigram, while activation structures the upper half. Low-position changes reshape Lake; high-position changes reconfigure Thunder. Multi-line movement across the trigram boundary reconstructs both the responsive field below and the activating pattern above, producing transformations that extend beyond either component alone.

Every changing line in the table inverts, and the completed six-line configuration then resolves into a second hexagram. The mapping includes six outcomes from one moving line and fifty-seven from combinations of multiple moving lines. The unchanging reading stands separately: all positions retain their original polarity, no resulting figure appears, and the Judgment of Hexagram 54 alone governs.

At maximum change, Secondary Marriage becomes Hexagram 53, Development, its exact complement. Development is likewise its King Wen partner, joined by inversion. Turning Hexagram 54 upside down yields Hexagram 53, so rotation and complete polarity reversal converge upon the same adjacent figure. The mechanisms remain different, even though this particular line pattern gives them an identical numerical result.
