About the Transformations of Hexagram 61

Hexagram 61, Inner Alignment (中孚 Zhōng Fú), places Lake below Wind. Two yin lines occupy the central positions, enclosed by paired yang lines at the base and top, making the complete figure vertically symmetric. Low-line movement reshapes Lake and the lower enclosure; high-line movement reshapes Wind and the upper enclosure. Changes across both halves redistribute the relation between the open center and its surrounding continuous lines.

Every designated changing line in the table inverts, after which the recomposed pattern resolves into a second hexagram. Six entries isolate single-line movement, and fifty-seven list all possible multi-line combinations. The table also records the unchanging reading, where no polarity changes, no secondary figure appears, and the Judgment of Hexagram 61 alone governs.

Changing all six positions transforms Inner Alignment into Hexagram 62, Small Exceeding, its complete complement and its King Wen partner. Because Hexagram 61 is vertically symmetric and reads identically upside down, inversion merely returns the original figure. The sequence pair must therefore be formed by complementation. This exceptional symmetry and complementary pairing mechanism are properties Inner Alignment shares with seven other figures.
