The Symbolism of Hexagram 17
Hexagram 隨 (Suí) describes responsive alignment. It concerns moving in accord with what is timely and appropriate rather than forcing one’s own direction. Its strength lies in adaptability, right attachment, and knowing what or whom to follow.
Hexagram 17 Judgment
隨，元亨，利貞，无咎。
(Suí, yuán hēng, lì zhēn, wú jiù.)
"Following. From the origin, there is smooth progress. It is favorable to remain correctly aligned. No blame."
This hexagram describes a condition in which success comes through responsive alignment rather than assertion. One does well by moving with what is sound and timely, while remaining rooted in what is steady.
Following is not passive imitation. It becomes fruitful only when guided by discernment and constancy.
Hexagram 17 Image
澤中有雷，隨。君子以嚮晦入宴息。
(Zé zhōng yǒu léi, suí. Jūn zǐ yǐ xiàng huì rù yàn xī.)
"Thunder within the lake: this is following. The superior person, as darkness approaches, goes inward to rest."
The image shows movement contained within receptivity. It suggests response that is coordinated and appropriate to the time.
The lesson is to follow the rhythm of conditions. When the day declines, one does not continue outward activity, but turns inward and restores oneself.
Line 3 Changing
系丈夫，失小子。隨有求得，利居貞。
(Xì zhàng fū, shī xiǎo zǐ. Suí yǒu qiú dé, lì jū zhēn.)
"Attached to the mature man, one loses the young one. In following, what is sought is obtained. It is favorable to remain settled and constant."
Here the choice is reversed: attachment is made to what is mature and substantial, while the lesser attachment falls away. This leads to a more fruitful direction.
Because one follows what is worthy, what is sought can be gained. Stability in that choice is beneficial.
Line 6 Changing
拘系之，乃從維之，王用亨于西山。
(Jū xì zhī, nǎi cóng wéi zhī, wáng yòng hēng yú xī shān.)
"It is held fast and then bound with cords. The king makes an offering on the western mountain."
This line shows following taken to its strongest form: what is joined is firmly secured. The movement culminates in solemn confirmation rather than casual association.
The final image suggests formal acknowledgment and consecration. What has been followed becomes established through ritual seriousness and enduring commitment.

The Symbolism of Hexagram 13
Hexagram 同人 (Tóng Rén) describes alignment among people based on what is shared and visible. It is not mere closeness, but union formed in the open through recognition of a common principle.
Hexagram 13 Judgment
同人于野，亨。利涉大川，利君子贞。
(Tóng rén yú yě, hēng. Lì shè dà chuān, lì jūn zǐ zhēn.)
"Union with people in the open. Passage. Favorable to cross the great river. Favorable to maintain constancy in the superior person."
True alignment arises in what is open and shared, not confined to private or exclusive circles. When union is based on a clear common ground, movement becomes possible even across difficulty.
Constancy ensures that this union does not fragment. Without a stable principle, association becomes unstable or partial.
Hexagram 13 Image
天火同人。君子以类族辨物。
(Tiān huǒ tóng rén. Jūn zǐ yǐ lèi zú biàn wù.)
"Heaven above, fire below: this is union with people. The superior person distinguishes kinds and groups things according to their nature."
Fire illuminates upward toward heaven, making what is shared visible. Union is formed through clarity, not through confusion or sameness.
The superior person does not erase differences but understands them, grouping and relating things appropriately. Through this, true alignment becomes possible.
