The Symbolism of Hexagram 28
Hexagram 大過 (Dà Guò) describes a condition where structure is under excessive load. The system is strained beyond its normal capacity, requiring decisive handling.
Hexagram 28 Judgment
大過,棟橈,利有攸往,亨。
(Dà guò, dòng náo, lì yǒu yōu wǎng, hēng.)
"Great excess. The main beam bends. It is beneficial to move with purpose. Passage is possible."
The central structure is under strain and no longer fully stable. This is not a balanced condition.
Movement is required, not avoidance. When handled directly and with clarity, passage through the situation can still be achieved.
Hexagram 28 Image
澤滅木,大過。君子以獨立不懼,遯世无悶。
(Zé miè mù, dà guò. Jūn zǐ yǐ dú lì bù jù, dùn shì wú mèn.)
"The lake submerges the trees: great excess. One stands alone without fear and withdraws without distress."
Water overwhelms the trees, indicating a system pushed beyond its limits.
In such conditions, independence and clarity are required. One does not rely on the unstable structure, but stands apart from it.
Line 6 Changing
過涉滅頂,凶,无咎。
(Guò shè miè dǐng, xiōng, wú jiù.)
"Crossing leads to submersion of the head. Harm. No fault."
The system is pushed beyond survivable limits. Overextension leads to being overwhelmed.
The failure arises from conditions, not from error in intent.
Changing to:
44. Encounter (姤 Gòu)
Trigrams
- Above
- ☰ Qián (Heaven)
- Below
- ☴ Xùn (Wind)
The Symbolism of Hexagram 44
Hexagram 姤 (Gòu) describes encounter—an unexpected element enters the system and makes contact with what is established. The issue is not simple union, but how a sudden influence is handled before it spreads too far.
Wind below heaven shows penetration entering from beneath a strong structure. What arrives is subtle but capable of far-reaching effect if not recognized early.
Hexagram 44 Judgment
姤,女壯,勿用取女。
(Gòu, nǚ zhuàng, wù yòng qǔ nǚ.)
"Encounter. A newly entering force is strong. It should not be joined with prematurely."
This hexagram describes the arrival of a potent element that enters suddenly and can influence the whole system. The warning is not about gender, but about not binding oneself too quickly to what has just appeared.
Early contact requires caution. What is strong and newly arrived should be observed and managed before being integrated.
Hexagram 44 Image
天下有風,姤。後以施命誥四方。
(Tiān xià yǒu fēng, gòu. Hòu yǐ shī mìng gào sì fāng.)
"Wind moves beneath heaven: encounter. What enters spreads quickly and must be clearly addressed."
Wind moving under heaven suggests influence traveling widely once it gains entry. A small point of contact can become system-wide if left undefined.
The proper response is clarity of response and scope. Once the new element appears, the system must state how it will be handled.
Peace and wisdom on your journey!
