About the Transformations of Hexagram 17

Hexagram 17, Following (隨 Suí), places Thunder below Lake. The lower trigram supplies activation at the base, while the upper trigram contributes openness and exchange. Changes among lines 1–3 reconfigure Thunder's initiating pattern; changes among lines 4–6 reshape Lake. When movement spans both trigrams, it alters the structural relation between an active lower impulse and the receptive field through which that impulse is expressed.

Every outcome in the table is obtained by inverting each line marked as changing and identifying the completed six-line figure as a second hexagram. Six entries isolate the effect of one moving line, and fifty-seven enumerate all combinations of multiple moving lines. The unchanging reading completes the mapping: no line reverses, no resulting figure appears, and the Judgment of Hexagram 17 alone governs.

When all six lines change, Following resolves into Hexagram 18, Correction of Decay, its full complement. That same figure is Following's King Wen partner, where the pairing mechanism is inversion: turning Hexagram 17 upside down produces Hexagram 18. In this pair, total polarity reversal and reversed vertical order converge upon one neighboring figure, although complementation and inversion remain distinct structural operations.
