About the Transformations of Hexagram 2

Hexagram 2, The Receptive (坤 Kūn), consists of six yin lines — Earth doubled as both the lower and upper trigram. The doubled structure presents pure receiving capacity, with no yang line interrupting its sustained openness. Movement at any position inserts a yang line into this uniform field; lower-line changes first reconfigure the foundational Earth trigram, whereas upper-line changes alter the figure's outward or culminating half.

Every moving line represented in the table changes polarity, after which the entire figure resolves into another numbered hexagram. Its rows account for the six possible single-line changes and all fifty-seven combinations involving two or more lines. They also include the unchanging reading, where the original configuration remains intact and the Judgment of Hexagram 2 alone governs.

Complete inversion of all six lines converts The Receptive into Hexagram 1, The Creative, its all-line complement. The same hexagram stands beside it as the King Wen pair partner. Since Hexagram 2 has vertical symmetry and is unchanged when turned upside down, ordinary inversion cannot generate its partner; complementation supplies the pairing mechanism instead. This exceptional relation belongs to only eight figures in the sequence, Hexagram 2 and seven others.
