I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 30: Radiance
Welcome to Hexagram 30, Radiance. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 30.1.5 means Hexagram 30 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 30
Hexagram 30, Radiance (離 Lí), consists of Fire doubled above and below. Each Fire trigram has a central yin line between two yang lines, and the repetition produces the same articulated structure in both halves. Low-line movement modifies the lower Fire while leaving the upper intact; high-line movement does the reverse. Changes across the midpoint break or reconstruct the correspondence between the two repeated trigrams.
Each moving line identified in the table inverts before the resulting six-line figure is matched to another hexagram. The table presents all six single-line transformations and fifty-seven multi-line combinations. It also records the unchanging reading, where both Fire trigrams remain as given, no resulting figure arises, and the Judgment of Hexagram 30 alone governs.
At complete transformation, Radiance becomes Hexagram 29, Repeated Hazard, the complement produced by reversing every line. Repeated Hazard is also its King Wen partner, but the pair cannot be formed through inversion: Hexagram 30 is vertically symmetric and reads identically upside down. Complementation therefore supplies the sequence relation. Radiance shares this unusual symmetry and pairing mechanism with exactly seven other hexagrams.
