About the Transformations of Hexagram 41

Hexagram 41, Decrease (損 Sǔn), places Lake below Mountain. The lower trigram supplies openness and exchange, while Mountain establishes stillness and containment above. Changes among lines 1–3 reshape Lake and the figure's internal field; changes among lines 4–6 reconstruct Mountain. Movement crossing the midpoint alters the relation between an open lower structure and the bounded form occupying the upper three positions.

Every transformation in the table is calculated by inverting each line marked as changing and matching the completed six-line pattern to a second hexagram. Six entries isolate single-line movement, while fifty-seven cover all combinations involving multiple lines. The unchanging reading completes the set: no line reverses polarity, no resulting figure appears, and the Judgment of Hexagram 41 alone governs.

When all six positions change, Decrease resolves into Hexagram 31, Resonance, its complete complement. Its King Wen partner is instead Hexagram 42, Increase, formed through inversion. Turning Hexagram 41 upside down yields the line pattern of Hexagram 42 and establishes the consecutive pair. Total polarity reversal therefore links Decrease with Resonance, while reversed vertical order links it with Increase.
