I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 48: The Well
Welcome to Hexagram 48, The Well. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 48.1.5 means Hexagram 48 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 48
Hexagram 48, The Well (井 Jǐng), combines Wind below with Water above. Wind supplies gradual penetration in the lower trigram, while Water introduces depth into the upper half. Changes at the lower three positions reconstruct Wind and the figure's base; changes at the upper three reconstruct Water. Multi-line changes spanning both ranges alter the complete relation between entry from below and the contained resource above.
The table calculates each outcome by reversing the polarity of every changing line and matching the finished pattern to another hexagram. Six entries isolate movement at one position, and fifty-seven enumerate all combinations involving several moving lines. The unchanging reading stands as a separate case: no inversion occurs, no second figure is generated, and the Judgment of Hexagram 48 alone governs.
With all six lines inverted, The Well resolves into Hexagram 21, Biting Through, its complete complement. Its King Wen partner is instead Hexagram 47, Oppression, formed through inversion. Rotation from top to bottom turns The Well into Oppression and creates the received sequence pair. Thus all-line polarity reversal and vertical reorientation lead to distinct figures and define separate structural relations.
