I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 56: Sojourning
Welcome to Hexagram 56, Sojourning. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 56.1.5 means Hexagram 56 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 56
Hexagram 56, Sojourning (旅 Lǚ), places Mountain below Fire. Mountain provides a bounded, still base, while Fire supplies differentiated clarity in the upper trigram. Movement among lines 1–3 reconstructs Mountain and the figure's lower support; movement among lines 4–6 reshapes Fire. Changes occurring across both trigrams revise the relation between temporary containment below and articulated expression above.
The table forms each resulting figure by inverting every designated changing line and matching the completed six-line pattern to a second hexagram. It covers six transformations involving one moving line and fifty-seven involving multiple lines. The unchanging reading is included as the case without inversion, in which the Judgment of Hexagram 56 alone governs and no resulting figure appears.
Full polarity reversal converts Sojourning into Hexagram 60, Limitation, its all-six-lines complement. The received sequence pairs Sojourning with Hexagram 55, Peak Fullness, through inversion instead. Rotating Hexagram 56 from top to bottom produces Peak Fullness's pattern and creates the neighboring pair. Complementation and rotation thus connect Sojourning to different configurations along separate structural axes.
