About the Transformations of Hexagram 28

Hexagram 28, Great Excess (大過 Dà Guò), combines Wind below with Lake above. Four central yang lines are enclosed by yin at the first and sixth positions, producing a vertically symmetric figure. Low-line transformations reshape Wind and the lower boundary; high-line transformations reshape Lake and the upper boundary. Multi-line changes spanning both trigrams redistribute the pronounced central concentration throughout the six-line structure.

For every entry in the table, each designated changing line reverses polarity and the final configuration resolves into a second hexagram. Six entries isolate single-line movement, while fifty-seven list every multi-line combination. The unchanging reading supplies the zero-line case: all positions retain their original values, and the Judgment of Hexagram 28 alone governs without a resulting figure.

Changing every position converts Great Excess into Hexagram 27, Nourishment, its complete complement and its King Wen pair partner. Hexagram 28 is vertically symmetric and unchanged when turned upside down, so ordinary inversion cannot generate a different neighboring figure. Its received pair is consequently formed by complementation. The property of reading identically in either vertical orientation belongs to Hexagram 28 and seven other figures in the sixty-four.
