I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 29: Repeated Hazard

Yin-Yang symbol

Welcome to Hexagram 29, Repeated Hazard. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 29.1.5 means Hexagram 29 with lines 1 and 5 changing.

About the Transformations of Hexagram 29

Hexagram 29, Repeated Hazard (坎 Kǎn), is Water doubled, with the same trigram below and above. Structurally, the repetition extends Water's pattern of a central yang line enclosed by yin through both halves of the figure. A change confined to lines 1–3 differentiates the lower Water from the upper; a change in lines 4–6 differentiates the upper from the lower, while movement in both can replace the doubled configuration entirely.

The table forms each transformed reading by inverting all changing lines and matching the completed six-line pattern to its resulting hexagram. It covers six cases involving one moving line and fifty-seven involving multiple moving lines. The unchanging reading retains the doubled Water figure without alteration, so no second hexagram is produced and the Judgment of Hexagram 29 alone governs.

When all six lines change, Repeated Hazard resolves into Hexagram 30, Radiance, its full complement. Radiance is likewise its King Wen partner, joined by complementation rather than inversion. Hexagram 29 is vertically symmetric and therefore reads identically upside down; rotation merely reproduces Repeated Hazard. This exceptional symmetry, which requires complementary pairing, is shared with seven other figures in the sequence.
