About the Transformations of Hexagram 7

Hexagram 7, The Army (師 Shī), has Water below Earth. A single yang line within the lower trigram gives Water its concentrated inner structure, while the three yin lines of Earth extend receptivity across the upper half. Low-position movement reconfigures the concealed lower pattern; high-position movement differentiates the uniform upper field. Changes on both sides of the trigram boundary redistribute the figure's concentrated and receptive elements.

The transformation table applies one rule throughout: every changing line inverts, and the new six-line pattern resolves into a second hexagram. Its coverage consists of six single-line changes plus fifty-seven multi-line combinations, including the single case in which all six positions move. The table also preserves the unchanging reading, where no second figure is generated and the Judgment of Hexagram 7 alone governs.

When the maximum change occurs, The Army becomes Hexagram 13, Union of People, its complement across all six positions. The King Wen sequence places The Army beside Hexagram 8, Holding Together, by a different mechanism. Inverting Hexagram 7 — turning the complete figure upside down — produces Hexagram 8. The pair is therefore rotational, while the relation to Union of People is produced by total polarity reversal.
