I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 42: Increase
Welcome to Hexagram 42, Increase. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 42.1.5 means Hexagram 42 with lines 1 and 5 changing.
About the Transformations of Hexagram 42
Hexagram 42, Increase (益 Yì), combines Thunder below with Wind above. Activation structures the lower trigram, and gradual penetration occupies the upper half. Low-line transformations modify Thunder and the initial movement of the figure; high-line transformations reshape Wind. When moving positions occur in both trigrams, the resulting configuration reconstructs the relation between activation at the base and influence extending through the upper structure.
The table applies one operation throughout: every changing line inverts, after which the recomposed six-line figure resolves into another hexagram. Six rows show the outcomes of one moving line, and fifty-seven enumerate all multi-line combinations. An unchanging entry is included as the zero-movement case, where the Judgment of Hexagram 42 alone governs and no second figure is formed.
Complete line reversal transforms Increase into Hexagram 32, Continuity, its all-six-lines complement. The received King Wen sequence pairs Increase with Hexagram 41, Decrease, by inversion rather than complementation. Rotation from top to bottom produces Decrease's pattern. These relations distinguish global polarity reversal, which leads to Continuity, from vertical inversion, which connects Increase with its immediate sequence neighbor.
