I Ching Oracle Lookup - Hexagram 60: Limitation

Yin-Yang symbol

Welcome to Hexagram 60, Limitation. The table below maps every combination of changing lines to its resulting hexagram — 63 transformations plus the unchanging reading. The notation reads from the bottom line upward: 60.1.5 means Hexagram 60 with lines 1 and 5 changing.

About the Transformations of Hexagram 60

Hexagram 60, Limitation (節 Jié), combines Lake below with Water above. Lake provides openness and exchange in the lower trigram, while Water introduces depth into the upper half. Movement in lines 1–3 reconstructs Lake; movement in lines 4–6 reconstructs Water. Multi-line changes spanning both trigrams alter the structural relation between an open lower field and the contained pattern occupying the upper positions.

The table calculates every result by reversing each changing line and matching the completed configuration to another hexagram. It enumerates six transformations involving one moving line and fifty-seven involving several moving lines. Alongside them stands the unchanging reading, in which all line values remain fixed, no second figure is generated, and the Judgment of Hexagram 60 alone governs.

When all positions change polarity, Limitation resolves into Hexagram 56, Sojourning, its full complement. Its King Wen pair partner is instead Hexagram 59, Dissolution, reached through inversion. Turning Hexagram 60 upside down produces Dissolution's line order and creates the consecutive pair. The complement and the received partner thus arise from separate operations, global polarity reversal and vertical rotation respectively.
